ITINERARY:

DAY 1: 
Home - San Jose - Alajuela (D)

Upon arrival in Costa Rica, reception by a private guide and transfer to your hotel. The drive from the airport to the hotel takes 50 minutes approximately. 

Depending on your arrival, there may be time for an afternoon coffee tour. 

Accommodation at Chayote Lodge, Recibidor Suite
Equipped with private balcony with panoramic views, a King-size bed, a sofa bed, IP phone, free WiFi access, minibar, a safety box,  and a large two-sink bathroom. Located only 50 minutes away from Juan Santamaría International Airport, between de towns of Naranjo and Zarcero, Chayote Lodge  lays in the outskirts of the Central Valley, in Llano Bonito de Naranjo, at 1500 m above sea level. Inspired by the rich coffee culture of  the region, the lodge’s architecture has been carefully designed to integrate the most noteworthy elements of the coffee pickers’ story  and lifestyle. For instance, the bungalows resemble the traditional Coffee Receiving Stations known locally as Recibidores”. Each of the Recibidor Suites boasts 535 sq  feet of space and offer a suspended balcony over a private coffee garden. Sitting at the highest point of the property, Quelites Restaurant offers some of the  most beautiful views from the Central Valley and a warm and inviting atmosphere. It offers delicious dishes prepared with locally-grown,  fresh ingredients, some of them produced in the lodge. The menu changes according to seasonal vegetables and fruits. The terrace café, just outside the main dining room, is the perfect setting for an ‘alfresco’ breakfast, lunch or afternoon coffee. Some of the different activities and tours available from Chayote Lodge include a visit to a coffee plantation, a city tour through Naranjo, a visit to Poas  Volcano National Park or to Juan Castro Blanco National Park, birdwatching or Zarcero photo tour. Chayote Lodge is a new lodging  concept that combines nature with the rural traditions and authentic lifestyle of the mountains and the warmth and hospitality of the  people of Costa Rica.

DAY 2: 
Alajuela – Arenal (B, L, D)

For breakfast, set out with your guide for a fun experience - “Costa Rica through its Food” Tour (includes guide, cooking lesson & ingredients) Enjoy a visit to a local home and learn how to prepare the best Costa Rican food in the traditional way. This incredible experience begins when Dona Elida shares with you her secrets to make the best Costa Rican  meals, she will teach how to make a gallo pinto on a wood stove, then you will make your own cheese tortilla and cook your own fried bananas to enjoy the best breakfast. Afterwards, continue with a private oxcart painting experience - During this educational and cultural activity, you will have the opportunity to meet an authentic local artisan, who will provide you with  interesting information, you will also learn about painting techniques, as well as the style he uses for his art pieces – typical oxcarts.  Additionally, this is an opportunity to know more about the Costa Rican culture. It is highly recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. 

Enjoy lunch at a Local Restaurant at Sarchi, before being transferred to your Arenal hotel.   

Accommodation at Hotel Arenal Manoa, Junior Suite 
These rooms were designed to find a pleasing atmosphere for your stay. Each one is equipped with two queen sized beds, air  conditioning, satellite television, private bath with hot water and a hair dryer, telephone, terrace with a view of the volcano, refrigerator,  safe-deposit box and coffee maker. Located 7 kilometers west from La Fortuna and surrounded by the La Palma River, that go around the hotel making an ideal refuge for  the great diversity of birds, some mammals and lizards, besides a large variety of plants. Surrounded by gardens, pastures and animals,  their rooms have been designed to offers you a panoramic view of the volcano. Visitors can take advantage of the spacious gardens  for walking and meditation as well as the opportunities to see the daily operations of a typical Costa Rican farm. The hotel features an  international restaurant, two swimming pools, Jacuzzi, wet bar, souvenir shop, Internet access at the reception, laundry service and  private parking. Also, a farming tour is included on the room rate. Each of their 80 rooms is equipped with two queen sized beds, air  conditioning, satellite television, private bath with hot water and a hair dryer, telephone, terrace with a view of the volcano, refrigerator,  safe-deposit box and coffee maker. 

Tonight, participate in the Arenal night experience with dinner
This tour is ideal for those who want to take advantage of every minute in Costa Rica, discovering some of the country’s nocturnal  wonders in a night hike. The tour starts in a small town known as La Tigra, located just 40 minutes from La Fortuna. Once you arrive, you will take the trail  into a small patch of rainforest in the process of regeneration with some mirrored lakes, which facilitate wildlife observation. You can  expect to see species like nocturnal birds and mammals, insects, amphibians, bats, and more. The trail will go around the mirrored lakes to the frog sanctuary, which is an area dedicated to the regeneration and natural  reproduction of frog species. Here you will discover a large number of species such as the dart frog and the bull frog, the smallest  and largest species in Costa Rica, as well as the spectacular Red Eyed Tree Frog, and the beautiful Glass Frog. 

After the tour, a delicious Costa Rican dinner prepared on a wood burning stove will await for you. Here you will enjoy dinner while  viewing the lights of the San Carlos Valley. Afterwards you will return to your hotel. It is highly recommended to bring hiking shoes or sneakers, comfortable-dark clothing, rain coat, insect repellent.

DAY 3: 
Arenal (B, L, D)

Breakfast at your hotel, then set out for the Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. Located within the corridor followed by birds migrating between North and South America, the trails and bridges of this project will bring  the visitor as close as any person could ever imagine observing the birds, the flowers and the lush vegetation of the primary rainforest.  It is a 250-hectares primary forest property, made of paths and bridges built to maintain the utmost harmony between man-made  structures and nature. The property has impressive views to Arenal Volcano and to the lake that feeds the largest hydroelectric plant  in Costa Rica. This walk is a fun and educative option to learn more about the forest and the local environment and enjoy the close contact with  nature. While walking along the trails, the fascinating world of the tropical forest will open to you. Along these three kilometers of trails,  visitors will be immersed in the diverse fauna and flora of this rainforest admiring colorful birds and tropical plant species. More than  50 bird species can be count at this site that offers one of the most productive bird watching walks of the region. Suitable for all ages  and fitness levels. 

Then, add a little exhilaration to your cloud forest visit as you join a zip lining tour through the canopy! A guide and all equipment will be provided.

Afterwards, a lovely picnic lunch arranged. Included: Bottle of white or red wine, cheese board, dried fruits, grapes and olives. Mid-day at leisure. 

In the afternoon continue to the Arenal Vida Campesina - here enjoy a tour of the farm and participate in collecting the corn, fruit and legumes that have been produced organically.  In addition, grind and taste a delicious cane juice made in a typical artisanal trapiche and, at the restaurant La Guaria Morada, be part of a typical Costa Rican cooking class (or sit back and relax while the others cook - your choice!) Learn to prepare native recipes and share typical Costa Rican dances and a family dinner with a local peasant family. 

DAY 4: 
Arenal (B, D)

Today you may choose between 3 adventures: 
A. A visit to a local waterfall for swimming
B. A horseback riding tour to a local waterfall
C. An ATV tour adventure 

Then in the afternoon, set out on a volcano hike to explore the active Arenal peak. Then follow it with dinner at the local hot springs. Enjoy soaking all evening in the amazing local hot baths. 

DAY 5:
Arenal - Puntarenas - Chiquita Island (B)

Breakfast at your hotel, then private departure from Arenal to Puntarenas by Orotina to visit a fruit market and taste some of the local expotic fruits. 

Then continue to the port, where we will take a boat transfer to the Chiquita Island. Check into your adventure glamping hotel!

DAY 8: 
Isla Chiquita  - Puntarenas - San Jose - Home (B)

After breakfast, take the boat transfer back to Puntarenas, where your private car will be waiting to take you to Juan Santamaria International Airport. This is a 3 hour drive, so your flight home should be after 4pm. If your flight home is earlier, we suggest spending the night in San Jose, and flying home on Day 9. ¡Hasta Luego!
