How to Do Norway Right: Fjords, Food & the Northern Lights

Norway isn’t a destination you simply visit—it’s one you feel.

From candlelit Arctic dinners beneath dancing auroras to silent fjord cruises framed by snow-dusted peaks, this is a country best experienced with intention. I wanted to do Norway right: slowly, thoughtfully, and with a balance of culture, cuisine, and once-in-a-lifetime moments.

This 14-day journey moves from the creative pulse of Oslo to the wild beauty of the Lofoten Islands, deep into the Arctic Circle in Tromsø, and through Norway’s most iconic fjords by boat and rail. Along the way, it’s about flavors as much as landscapes, local stories as much as natural wonders—and creating a travel experience that feels as unforgettable as the scenery itself.

Tours primarily visit the north side of Lofoten, where minimal artificial light and a wide northern horizon enhance viewing opportunities. The tour is suitable for anyone eager to see and experience the Northern Lights while learning about life and landmarks in Lofoten. Capturing photos of the Northern Lights can be tricky, but the guide provides tips and takes photos during the trip, sharing them afterward. Norway in a Nutshell

After breakfast and checking out, private Transfer Bergen to Gudvangen. Here, we board the Fjordcruise Gudvangen - Flåm. The drive from Bergen to Gudvangen is a beautiful journey through some of Norway's most stunning landscapes. This transfer offers you the opportunity to stop at scenic locations along the way. Simply inform the driver if you'd like to take photos, and they will accommodate your request, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable journey.

Nærøyfjord has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2005. The fjord is considered an archetypical fjord landscape and is among the most scenically outstanding anywhere. The fjord has mostly stayed untouched in modern times and no road connections mean the only way to properly explore it is by boat. From the fjord cruise, you will have first class views of the spectacular landscape with old farms and idyllic fjord villages which have stayed the same for centuries. You can begin your fjord cruise from either Gudvangen or Flåm. If you travel from Gudvangen the vessel will begin its journey sailing through the narrow Nærøyfjord before the boat continues through the idyllic Aurlandsfjord before arriving at Flåm.

The modern vessels are designed to maximize the sightseeing experience. They are fully electrical with no noise or emissions disrupting the atmosphere. Panoramic windows give a view of the marvellous landscape, tall mountains, and beautiful waterfalls when sitting inside the lounges. The walkways outside are inspired by the winding trails going up the steep mountains next to the fjord and give you plenty of space to enjoy the view. The full universal layout means everyone can get around the ship inside and outside as they wish.

Upon arrival in Flam, check into your hotel.

Flåm - Flåmsbrygga Hotel - Superior Room with Balcony

Day 13

Breakfast and check out, then it is time to continue our Norway in a Nutshell journey! The Flåm Railway from Flåm to Myrdal. In the span of a brief hour, the train takes you from sea level at the Sognefjord in Flåm to the Myrdal mountain station at 867 metres above sea level. Myrdal is also a station on the Bergen Railway, which means that the Flåm Railway connects with trains running between Bergen and Oslo. The Flåm Railway is one of the steepest standard-gauge railway lines in the world, with 80% of the journey at a gradient of 5.5%. The train runs through spectacular scenery, alongside the Rallar Road, vertiginous mountainsides, foaming waterfalls, through 20 tunnels and offers so many viewpoints that, for many people, a single trip up and down is not enough. National Geographic Traveler Magazine calls the Flåm Railway one of the top 10 train journeys in Europe while in 2014 Lonely Planet Traveller went even further, and named it the best train journeys in the world.

Train from Myrdal-Oslo on the Bergen line. Enjoy the dramatic change in scenery as you head from Myrdal, through the mountains past Finse (the highest train station in Norway at 1,222 metres above sea level), and onwards to Oslo. As a passenger, you get up close to the landscape and culture along the tracks in a way that’s not possible on a plane. Arrival back in Oslo and check into your hotel.
